Description

Piroctone Olamine (OCT), is a highly effective broad-spectrum antiseborrheic, antipruritic, and anti-microbial agent. Besides, it is widely used in personal care products, particularly anti-dandruff shampoos and oil-control cleansers.

Applications

Properties:
First, it provides potent broad-spectrum antimicrobial performance. For instance, piroctone olamine exerts powerful fungicidal and inhibitory effects against Malassezia, which is the causative organism of dandruff. It is also effective against different species of bacteria and molds.
Second, it delivers excellent safety and mildness with no irritation and no toxic effects to skin and mucous membranes as a organic salt compound. Compared with conventional ZPT and other anti-dandruff agents, it does not accumulate on the scalp and is considered highly safe for long-term use.
Third, it features outstanding compatibility and stability. It appears as a white to pale yellow crystalline powder, slightly soluble in water, and freely soluble in ethanol, surfactant solutions and select cosmetic oils. Furthermore, it maintains great stability within the typical pH range of common cosmetic formulas and resists degradation induced by light and heat.
Applications:
First, in terms of scalp care and anti-dandruff products, it is widely used in high-efficacy anti-dandruff shampoos, oil-control refreshing cleansers, dandruff-targeted anti-itch formulations, anti-dandruff conditioning masks. Its key functions include killing Malassezia at the source, rapidly eliminating dandruff and alleviating dandruff-associated itch and redness.
Second, for body cleansing and antimicrobial products, it is widely used in oil-control acne wash, antibacterial hand sanitizers and intimate-care solutions. Its functions are to inhibit growth of pathogenic skin microflora, improve body acne on the chest or back and reduce body odor with the help of its broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties.
Third, for various creams, lotions and cleansers, its functions include delivering antimicrobial effects, synergistically boosting preservative performance, and lowering irritation caused by conventional preservatives.
Recommended usage level:
For mild daily anti-dandruff or oil-control shampoos, the recommended usage level is about 0.2%-0.5%, which effectively satisfies daily prevention and control of scalp dandruff.
For salon-strength intensive anti-dandruff and problematic scalp care products, the recommended dosage ranges from 0.5% to 1.0%. For stubborn dandruff and seborrheic scalp conditions, it delivers fast-acting and long-lasting itch relief alongside reliable anti-dandruff efficacy.
For auxiliary preservative or localized antimicrobial products, the recommended usage level is 0.1%-0.3%.

Advantages

We are capable of conducting high-yield continuous and semi-continuous production processes, which curbs side reactions and cuts raw material losses. Accordingly, we deliver superior cost efficiency starting from the production source.
Although cosmetic-grade OCT requires high purity, we can precisely control free amines, heavy metals and impurity levels during the production process, ensuring these products meet the strictest pharmacopoeial and cosmetic raw material standards globally.
Through optimized crystallization and jet milling processes, our OCT boasts precisely tailored micron particle size distribution. This markedly elevates its dispersibility and dissolution efficiency within shampoos and various surfactant systems, effectively inhibiting precipitation, sedimentation and particle agglomeration during shelf storage.
We are equipped with a fully automated DCS control system to monitor reaction temperature, pH value, centrifugation, drying and other key parameters. Supported by this system, our products maintain stable batch-to-batch consistency in appearance (white to pale yellow crystalline powder), melting point and assay content throughout mass production.

FAQ

Q1: Compared with traditional anti-dandruff agents including ZPT,what are core advantages of OCT?
A: As a nonionic compound, OCT offers superior water solubility, great formulation compatibility and low irritation to the skin and eyes. In addition, it leaves no harmful residues and will not accumulate on the scalp or hair. Most importantly, long-term use will not result in hair dryness or scalp sensitivity, and it remains stable across varying pH ranges.
Q2: What can OCT provide ancillary functions in addition anti-dandruff and anti-itch?
A: OCT can not only effectively killing Malassezia that causes dandruff, but also deliver broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. As a result, it is extensively applied as an auxiliary preservative in cosmetic formulations. It can lower the dosage of conventional preservatives and meanwhile enhance the overall mildness and safety of the finished products.
Q3: Is OCT prone to precipitation or affecting product clarity in surfactant systems?
A: As long as the formulation process is proper, OCT will not affect the products’ clarity. In practice, we recommend to adopt a “surfactant pre-dissolution method” or firstly to dissolve in alcohols or polyols, ensuring it fully enters the micellar system before water dilution. Therefore, the products always maintain long-term clarity and avoid precipitation.
Q4: Can OCT maintain its chemical stability within a broad pH range?
A: Yes! OCT exhibits excellent acid-base resistance and thermal stability. Within the wide pH range of personal care formulations (pH 3.0–9.0), it consistently maintains potent antimicrobial activity and will not undergo hydrolysis or deactivation.
Q5: Do you offer samples of OCT for lab testing? What is the MOQ for trials?
A: We support customer experimentation in a lab setting. We can provide free small samples to qualified partners with genuine interest. Please contact our sales team for details.

Regulatory compliance

China: Piroctone Olamine (OCT) is listed in the Inventory of Cosmetic Raw Materials Used (2023 edition) acted by NMPA. Besides, it is a legally conventional raw material that does not require new ingredient registration or filing.
European Union: As a preservative or anti-dandruff ingredient, it is not restricted or restricted-use prohibitions in Annexes to Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council on cosmetic products. And the maximum usage in rinse-off products is typically 1.0%, non-rinse-off products is 0.5%.
United States: It is a dandruff or antimicrobial cosmetic ingredient that does not require pre-market FDA approval.
Japan: It is listed in the Japanese Standards of Cosmetic Ingredients (JSCI) as a conventionally permitted cosmetic ingredient.
Canada: It is not restricted on the Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist, making it a legally permitted cosmetic raw material for use in standard formulations.
Australia: It is listed in Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals (AIIC) as a legally conventional raw material.
